One pattern that is both classic and endlessly stylish is tartan. The pattern which consists of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands of colour is instantly recognisable and easily adaptable in your home, and here, we’re going to be taking a look at a few of the ways it can add a touch of Scottish charm to your living space.

This living room shows a very traditional use of tartan to subtly bring a sense of refined grandeur. The patterned fabric conjures up imagery of hunting lodges and retreats from distant misty mountains. And when put next to wooden furniture, soft leather and a roaring fireplace, it will transport you instantly to the Scottish highlands!

Of course, the use of tartan doesn’t have to be restricted to soft furnishings such as cushions and throws. This country bedroom makes great use of a fantastic red and white designer tartan wallpaper to add a stylish touch to the cosy and comforting contrast of textures on the bedspread.

And for such a classic pattern, tartan is surprisingly adaptable. This striking wallpaper features an almost magnified tartan detail, which when used with the on-trend monochrome blacks and whites, creates a very bold and modern backdrop to the traditional living room furniture.

This delightful pair of matching tartan lampshades proves that tartan can be chic and cute. The lampshades provide a defined focal point above the simple rustic kitchen furniture, but the pattern is diffuse enough to not be intrusive.

And this last picture really shows how adaptable tartan is. The use of tartan on the 1950s Italian chairs, which when contrasted with the bold metallic silver and startling use of colour, shows that just about anything goes with this highly versatile pattern!
