Let there be light!

So, to follow on from the last blog post, I thought I would do some research into accessories for your child's room, like lighting for example!

However, as I started looking around at the different options, I was amazed at the variety and so this has kind of turned into a blog dedicated to lighting!! From night lights to wall lights, ceiling lights to lamps the choices out there seem endless. I could have spent many hours looking through various shop websites, but I have kept it down to just 3 sites and have tried to show you a wide range of what is available, you never know, it might be just what you were looking for!
So if your little one has trouble sleeping in the dark, then check out some of these night lights for that extra bit of comfort...

Then the most popular, the ceiling lights...as you can see, some of them are pretty standard, but there are also some cool lampshade designs available, and I've thrown some unusual ones in there too. (I think the cheese is one of my favourites!)

There are also some great options for wall lights too, from large mural lights, to small simple desgins, such as the three shown below.

Then last but not least, there are the subtle, sweet and very stylish fairy lights, which can come in all shapes as sizes, such as this moon/cloud one shown above.

With so much choice it's hard to know where to start, but no matter what size room you're working with, or what your colour scheme is, the aim of this post was to inspire you to have creativity in all aspects of your home, and to let you know that there are no limits to what you can achieve. You will be sure to find something out there that fits perfectly and adds style as well as light to your child's bedroom, giving them the perfect atmosphere for every occasion.

Changes...

The news that there will soon be the patter of tiny feet in your world, can send your mind into over-drive! Making sure you have all the equipment you need, clothes, toys, nappies and wipes, to last what seems like forever, can be stressful enough and of course, you have to decide how to decorate that all important nursery?! So, when you are considering colours, furniture, accessories and everything else needed to make the new addition to your family feel welcomed in their new home, it is important to think about the changes you might want to make in the not-too-distant future.

The phrase, 'They grow up so quickly', often said by distant relatives during family visits, is all too true and soon enough your tiny baby, who was fairly impartial to the décor of the room, will suddenly have their own character, interests, likes and dislikes and a voice to tell you about them!
So how do you make the changes to your child's bedroom, without spending too much money every couple of years?

Simplicity is the key to keeping a room completely versatile. Using white furniture and white paint might seem a bit too plain, but when you add in the baby's toys, books, wall hangings and other accessories, the room can still look stylish and homely. It also leaves you with a completely blank canvas when your little one gets a bit bigger.

Or if you want to add a bit of colour to your nursery, choose gender neutral colours, such as this soft yellow and compliment it with adaptable furniture, such as this white wardrobe and rocking chair. Choosing just one wall to paint with a brighter colour, will save you a lot of time when it comes to updating the room, and the furniture will be able to grow into whatever themes you require.

Starting with these simple ideas will leave you with plenty of space to develop the room to suit your child as they grow up.

As your baby becomes a toddler and the toys begin to multiply, there shouldn't be any reason to change these simple designs straight away, just let the toys become part of the décor! Then as your child grows and develops their own hobbies and favourite things, you can add to the room just by changing the curtains, the bedding and adding in a few cushions. Such a simple change could transform your nursery/playroom into a perfect seaside haven.

Using this neutral base will ensure that you will always have a blank canvas to work with each time your child grows out of one thing and into another. You will be able to change the look of the room regularly, at no great expense, keeping it fresh and most importantly, giving your child a room they will grow up to love and love to grow up in!

Choices, choices...

Fancy sprucing up your living room before the family descends for Christmas?

Here are a few quirky suggestions to add your own personality into your living room, making yours that little bit different from the rest of the living rooms on your street!

Bright and bold is great for a light and airy living room. Blocks of bold, punchy colours, give a fresh look to the space and if you are lucky enough to have high ceilings and windows, why not add some personality to the walls, by not painting all the way to top, leaving a rough line just before the ceiling, as shown in this turquoise example. (left)

Choose furniture and accessories with clean, simple lines to create a streamlined look. Geometric patterns can be a funky addition, giving a tidy, retro look. (right)

Or, go super-size with a piece of furniture or accessory, like this oversized lamp, shown below. It could add a playful element into a neutral room, creating a surreal 1950's atmosphere. (below)

Keep things simple, by using a white colour scheme, paired with a selection of up to two primary colours. You can play with the shades by separating the room into two zones, as shown. This would be great for an open plan living room and dining area. (left)

Stripes are a bold statement, and perfect for feature walls. But why not go for vertical stripes throughout the room to add an extra boldness and personality to your living room?! This look works perfectly in a room with plenty of natural light, and is great with some retro-style seating. (above)

Or if you absolutely love one colour in particular, then why not stick with what you love? Make sure that you play with the tones throughout the room, to keep it looking modern and fresh. (right)

Carefully chosen wall art, could be the perfect accessory to bring together an open-plan living room and dining area. Choose art that compliments your colour scheme, such as these black prints in a neutral surrounding. (left)

Delicately patterned floral wallpaper could give a great lift to your room. Especially when paired together with some quirky accessories, such as these all-white vases and light. The partnership manages to bring an element of fun into your living room, without being too overpowering. (below)

The best thing about it, is that it's YOUR space and YOUR personality that will shine through, so dare to be different and have fun creating your new living room!

A weekends work

So the last bank holiday before Christmas is nearly here....
are you going to be doing any DIY?

I have plans to decorate my bathroom, as my family is away for the weekend. Our paint-work needs a little TLC after four years and the wall mural I put on a few years back is now a bit boring so I'm thinking it is time for a change.

We currently have large white tiles on one wall, with a white bathroom suite, grey flooring and grey slate tiles around our wash basin with chrome fixtures and fittings. We chose this 4 or 5 years ago as our base scheme which we have added to with orange for the first few years. Then we added olive green and orange, but now we want to go for white, grey and yellow and get rid of the orange and green.

I need to get a few elements before the weekend including paint and a new bin and some storage for the bath toys (that seem to multiple every time they touch the water, a bit like the film Gremlins). We also need a new shower curtain and finally I need to print a wall mural for the left-hand wall and some wall stickers for the tiles.

We're fortunate not to have a huge bathroom from a cost point of view, living in a small terrace cottage has it's benefits. However this is also a frustration when I started looking on the web at other peoples bathrooms for inspiration, as we cannot do half the things others have done. Here are some samples of what others have done.

Aside from all the nice painting and decorating stuff I also need to find and fix the small leak that has affected our kitchen ceiling with a nice grey patch...joy!

I hope you get all your jobs done this weekend, big or small and for those of you doing nothing enjoy it :)

Out with the Old and in with the New!

Our fabulous designer Jen Leggett has created some amazing new products for our range of childrens wall stickers. An immediate favourite with our customers is the Noah's Ark wall sticker, available in 2 sizes, perfect for a nursery, childs bedroom or play space. I keep fighting the urge to print one off for our toddlers bedroom, surely there's only so many times a year we can change her wall stickers...or is there?

Magazine Photo Shoot

Wall stickers are great - we all know that. But as someone who does room makeovers all the time for magazines, I'm particularly aware of how they can add an extra dimension - dramatic or gentle - to a finished room.

I recently shot a home office makeover - in fact grab a copy of the new "Your Home" magazine and you can see the feature, but I thought it might be fun to show the process of how these things came together. The room has a woodland theme so I asked for some of the delicate flower stickers in three colours that tone with the room - white, beige and a soft sage green.

I cut them all into separtate pieces so each can be handled individually. There was a small blank space on the wall by the desk that I knew would be better with stickers - something lovely to look at as you work... but how many and what colour? Well the wall was white, so the green and beige would be best, and the ceiling sloped so it made sense to have a small flower in the corner with a larger one to the right where the ceiling was higher.

I masking taped the tall green one in place first as that just seemed to fit really well. Then I tried all sorts of combinations either side - different colours, and different flowers. I took snaps of each combination as often I find it easier to compare the different combinations when they're next to each other on screen. Have a look at the pictures below - you can see the different versions I tried.

In the end I decided less is more - with just a few stems the finish is delicate and gentle, not overpowering. I then used some other stems on another wall (white flowers on a beige wall) which tie the room together. It's a good way to make a room scheme pull together in a casual way - I love this look!

So what to learn from this? I'd always suggest trying different combinations or positions of stickers to get it absolutely right. It may take half an hour longer but it ensures everything's perfect. Cut the stickers out and use tabs of masking tape. Take pictures, or just stand back and look, then add or take away. But remember, the joy of these stickers is you can always add more or take some off later if you change your mind.... fantastic!

So our comp is over and what a great one it was, we had loads of great entries so thank you to all who entered. When I thought of the competition I really wanted people posting and commenting on others photos and maybe asking for feedback and then giving it....and that is what we got. It was a pleasure to see the positive approach everyone had, so many thanks to everybody.

I wanted to share the full comment we got from Rick, Becky and Victoria so people could see how we made the results up and see the comments on their choices. so they follow

Becky is well place to judge this competition as she is a regular writer for Your Home magazine. Becky knows a few things about interiors and the practical application as readers will see in the magazine. Becky is also a blogger here on the Wall Glamour blog, where she covers tips and trends as well as a "how to use wall stickers" feature.

"What great photos! I've had a long look and a few stood out but I admit is was tricky to decide especially on the order of first and second as they are such hugely different projects."

1st: Alison Ford - Nursery
This demonstrates how to combine different stickers, wall background colours and soft furnishings to fantastic effect - I absolutely love this! The road running around the room will make the most of it's proportions, and the hills and sky add cheerful colour. The layered window dressing is visually soft and practical too and the wall paint has been chosen carefully to match properly rather than be any old blue and green. The winner's little boy can let his imagination run riot as he makes up stories of who's in the cars and planes and where they're going too. Mum should be proud of what she's created - it looks well thought out and the attention to detail is to be commended.

2nd: Cat Barrett - Kitchen
This kitchen looks fresh, modern and practical. I particularly like the blue tiles as these combine beautifully with walnut to give warmth, and the white units will always look clean and bright. It's great to see someone embracing colour like this rather than sticking to the safe choices - and the copper light fittings are inspired. Love it - I'd like to live there!

3rd: Sammy Comper - Bedroom
The colours are soft and relaxing and I really like the blue/grey and bold stripes as they are gentle on the eye and a welcome change from often-used neutrals. The bold artwork deserves a mention too as it really lifts the room.

But special mention too to Di Coke - showing how to combine WG stickers and fabric to brilliant effect. Great to see a nursery that isn't twee, and has a fun, retro modern feel. And also Becky Lomax for having the patience of a saint to create the horizontal striped wall - good job!

Victoria Boulton (Grosvenor Interiors)
Wall Glamour met Victoria on a project in Leeds about four years ago and we haven't looked back. We love work with her and she has a keen sense of "what is hot and what is not" in terms or interiors design. We can't mention any names, but Vic has styled the homes of some very wealth clients, which might include a footballer or two ;)

Love all the effort that went in to this room, especially the clever use of red as the perfect complimentary brings the whole look alive – well done.

I have to say Di Coke’s Nursery with blue spots and Sammy Camper’s Tranquil Bedroom did make it to my short list – I also loved the retro 70’s carpet, my mum had something similar!

I'm a graphic designer so these strong lines and colours really appealed to me and to top that all off when I was sorting the results out on Friday my wife said "can you do that in our room" which is a good result.

2nd: Di Coke
Another strong design here loving the decor and colour combinations. I did wonder if I should include a design with our wall stickers in but it is such a great room I didn't think Di should be punished for using our products, but please understand I did not choose it because it had wall stickers.

3rd: Sally Comper
Really nice room, little girly for me but I am rewarding the effort that has gone into it as it is really nice.

Please note Alison Ford and Cat Barret were drawing for joint 1st but I didn't feel it right to put my vote behind either one to swing the vote, so we tossed a coin and Alison won. I was worried that it would appear we favoured Alison because she had used our wall stickers, but I didn't think it fair to penalise Alison, so that is why it came down to a coin....as you can trust them to be impartial.

How to Wall Paper Corners

This piece will be overlapped by the next piece of paper. You will need to measure the papers width again from the corner and draw another straight vertical line to work to. Make extra sure that the new piece of paper is smooth and its edges rolled with the edging roller.

It is very hard to match perfectly, but will be much less noticeable in a corner.

How to Hang Wallpaper - Basic Tips

Tools: Measuring tape, Dust sheets, Wallpaper Paste, Paste board, Sponge and Bucket for clean water, Brush and Bucket for Paste, Edging Roller, Papering brush, Pencil and Spirit Level

IMPORTANT: Check that all rolls of wallpaper have the same batch number

Preparing Walls

Remove any old paper, fill cracks and sand as needed. If you are also painting the room make sure that it is completely dry before you start wallpapering.

Generally wallpaper away from windows, measure wallpaper to get width. When you have chosen your starting point useing a spirit level draw a straight vertical line to which you can put your first piece of paper.

Always following the manufacturers instructions, all papers are different and need different pastes and soaking times.

Measure wall length and cut paper approximately. Paste on table and leave for stated time for paste to soak in, always apply paste evenly making sure that all the edges are pasted. Fold both ends in this makes it easier to transport to your wall.

Starting at the top and using papering brush line paper up with your straight line, brush paper edge to edge, brushing out any bubbles which you may have trapped.

Working downwards to the bottom, use the edging roller to make sure both edges are stuck well down. Run scissors or knife along top and bottom edges to make a crease and cut along crease with scissors or stanley knife to remove any excess.

Apply the next pieces in the same way always using a sponge to remove any remaining paste at the joints.

Obviously your first attempts may not be perfect but do not give up it will get easier.

How To Paint Freshly Plastered Wall

You are probably on our website looking at wall stickers as you have recently decorated a room or are just about to re-decorate. So I thought that maybe you would like a few tips and hints from a professional so I have enlisted the help of Jen Pashby who is my local painter and decorator. If you are a regular DIYer, no doubt you'll already be familiar with these techniques, but those of you who have never picked up a paint brush this could be the information you need to start on your own project.

Tools: Matt paint, bucket, roller, brush and dust sheets ( water if needed)

It is very important to wait until the plaster is completely dry before painting otherwise moisture will be trapped behind the paint.

There are two ways you can paint. First it is to buy a cheap emulsion paint. Cheap, because it tends to be thin, or you could thin paint down yourself with a bit of water. This will prime the wall, two coats will be needed before applying emulsion paint.

Second you can now buy trade matt paint especially for fresh plaster.

How to Paint a Feature Wall

After painting the rest of the wall with your roller start the edging of your feature wall. There is no quick fix to getting a great straight line apart from practice, but here are some tips to help .

I find the smaller the brush the harder it is to get a good line. I use at least a 1.5" brush, load your brush with enough paint so that you can paint a good long straight line, the longer i can do this for the better my line is. I have shown in photo the best angle to hold the brush for getting the best results.

And don't forget its ok to Breath!!!!

Childrens Canvas Prints

We have launched a new product a few weeks back, but I kind of forgot to give it the fan-fair I think it deserves. Of course I would say that being the boss of Wall Glamour, but really it is more a testament to the talented people that work here and we have a few fantastic illustrators that freelance for us.

The principle of these canvas prints is that they make your room look lovely, but whilst normal canvas prints stop at the edges of the wood we wanted a way of expanding the design beyond the frame. So the logical option for us was to create a set of wall stickers that compliment the canvas either by carrying the design off the canvas and onto the wall like the branch on this canvas print, or by providing extra elements like the balloons above or the monkey on our jungle canvas print.

Check them out soon as they are proving really popular....even with me forgetting to push them.

How to Paint Skirting Board

Start by covering the floor with the dust sheet and then using the masking tape, mask the floor, as close to the skirting as you can. It'd be best to open widows for ventilation.

Start by undercoating in one corner of the room and work your way around. Loasd the brush with enough undercoat as you are happy with, then start painting with even strokes. As I am right handed I go from left to right.

When painting the top, try to do it in a long even stroke as possible, take your time!! And always check for drips!! Once done let the undercoat dry (always read the manufacturers instructions for drying time) then put the top coat of gloss on.

If you are covering wood which has previously been strained, it is a good idea to put two coats of undercoat on as you may find the strain underneath may come through and spoil your lovely new gloss finish!!!

How to Paint a Door

You are probably on our website looking at wall stickers as you have recently decorated a room or are just about to re-decorate. So I thought that maybe you would like a few tips and hints from a professional so I have enlisted the help of Jen Pashby who is my local painter and decorator. If you are a regular DIYer, no doubt you'll already be familiar with these techniques, but those of you who have never picked up a paint brush this could be the information you need to start on your own project.

Heres what you'll need: 1.5" Brush, Undercoat and Gloss, Sand paper, Dust sheet, Scraper and a cleaning cloth.

Put the dust sheet down, prepare woodwork first by removing any dirt or grease. Then finish prep by filling and sanding any dents or flaky paint. A wise thing to do is to paint the door frame behind the door so that you can then open it to paint the rest.

When Painting a standard door, start at the top and work your way down. If you are painting a panelled door, you may find it helpful to follow these easy guidelines and photos.

A. First Panels

B. Then centre vertical surface (stile), leaving the outside stile until last.

C. Then the horizontal flat surface (rails).

D. Lastly the outside vertical stile.

An easy way to remember is to always follow the grain of the wood. Try not to overload the brush and always check for drips !!!

NOTE: New untreated wood should be primed first before undercoating.

THE PAINT THE TOP OF THE DOOR ARGUMENT!
The old school decorators would tend not to paint the tops and the bottoms of the doors, as it is believed that the wood can then be left to breath. Doors are often already painted from factories and can sometimes not be made from solid wood. The other argument is that it stops the expansion of the wood.

MY RULE IS IF IT IS PAINTED ALREADY THEN PAINT IT IF NOT DON'T.

How to: flower power stairway

We spend so much time walking up and down stairs, and often look up a boring flight of steps as soon as we walk in the door – not very welcoming! Use wall stickers to brighten up a hall with a project that will work with any colour you choose – bright and breezy stickers for a cheery look, or choose monochromatic tones for a touch of urban chic.

I’ve used small flowers which come in a pair. I like the less structured look of different design flowers in a range of colours but you could get a lovely crisp look using one design in one colour. Whichever you choose, cut the flowers in to separate pieces.

Use masking tape to position a flower over the centre of each stair tread. I think it looks better to mix the colours up so two flowers of the same colour aren’t next to each other, but this is personal choice so if you’d rather have flowers in pairs then that is fine too. Stand back to check you are happy with the order of the flowers and reposition any you don’t like.

Peel the backing from one flower, smooth into position on the wall then carefully remove the top clear film. Repeat going up the stairs until all flowers are in place. You could go all the way up and round the landing too for great visual flow. Don’t worry if the stems aren’t verical – in fact it looks better and more natural if each one is in a slightly different position.

For an attractive addition, place a butterfly above the flower heads flying up the stairs.
If you have children, one butterfly for each child is a nice way of personalising, and they will love seeing “their” butterfly going up to bed (or other garden bird or animal – Wall Glamour have a wide range perfect for this).

This is the first in a series of tips from Becky Clarke a contributing writing on Your Home magazine. Your Home magazine have featured our wall stickers on a few occasions and we loved Becky's approach to real life projects so we commissioned her to show us some great ways of using our wall stickers

Lots of us have breakfast bars where there is a large slab of untouched surface – perfect for making individual with some fabulous stickers. I decided to make each member of the family’s space their own, with dad’s boot prints, mum’s footprints, and a child’s hand print all in a zesty citrus mix of colours.

Cut the stickers into individual components. Make piles of “left” and “right” as you need to apply the stickers in order to create the appearance of feet or hands walking up the wall.

Measure along the breakfast bar and stick masking tape marks evenly spaced for the number of people you want to represent – I had three people to mark but do as many as you need – you could even include an animal footprint too with WG’s pawprint stickers.

I started on the centre line of green footprints. Use masking tape to space the footprints and move them around until you’re happy with the positioning then peel off the backing paper and smooth each one in place.

Tape the other two lines of stickers either side, equidistant from the centre stickers. Again, move them around until they look great. Remember these look better and more natural if a bit higgledy piggledy rather than being exactly spaced. When you’re happy, peel off the backing, smooth in place then remove the protective film.

Finally, personalise everyone’s bar stool with matching stickers too for a great co-ordinated look.

One of our new products is this Vintage Bunting Wall Sticker which comes in two options, Flower or Union Jack. The bunting is about 130cm wide so if your room is wide you'll need a few lengths to cover it. But at £10 a length it is not too expensive, just a couple of lengths should help theme a room.

All you have to do is upload photos of the best decorated room in your house to our Facebook page, we'll then vote on the best rooms and award the winner and runner ups with the prizes.....it's that simple!

We want to see the best you have to offer in your home, but don't worry this is not about huge or expensive interiors, it's more about style, clever use of colour, the feel of the space, the consistency of the design or any number of other ideas we might find.

How We Make Multicoloured Wall Stickers

This is how we manufacture your multicoloured wall stickers. We actually manufacture all products to order so when an order comes in for one of our Fairy Wall Stickers - Multicoloured we go to our Mac open the file, get down a role of white vinyl and put it into our cut printer.

Once the printer has finished printing it then cuts the around the design.

Then we start to 'weed', this is what we call it when we remove the unecessary bits from the design.

After this we cover the vinyl in "application tape" this is the tape that helps you transfer the design to you wall. The app tape should be removed once you have fitted it to the wall.

We have to smooth the app tape down to make sure its stuck to the vinyl.

Then we trim the product up.

We package the product up with your receipt, instructions and applicator.

We staple the tube up and send it on its way to you.

Once the design is cut we stick it on our bench.

Today things are a mess. Literally a mess. My bathroom has too much stuff in it but like so many other bathrooms across the land I NEED it all. Well nearly all of it. So with this in mind I started to think about all the different ways to get a fabulous, sleek, tidy bathroom, with things either hidden or display - with a place to put everything. That is the key to tidiness I think. As long as there is an easy place to put things away yet still get at them, then the battle’s almost won. So what can you do to clear your own clutter?...

Generally speaking, bathroom things are a bit ugly (there aren’t that many fabulous shampoo bottles around) but they are necessary. So if possible, I’d suggest you have a combination of storage options – some place to keeps things out of sight, as well as somewhere to display prettier toiletries and bottles.
Shelves: Obvious really as most people have them – in glass or wood. My only thought here is de-clutter. Don’t just jam things on until there’s no space left. Clear things away and only have nice things out. Decant liquids like bubble bath or soap into prettier bottles rather than the plastic ones they come in.

Basin cupboards: A pedestal basin is usual in many homes but the nature of the design means the space below is completely wasted. If you’re having a new bathroom I urge you to get some storage below – I promise you won’t regret it. Big basins with big drawers that hold so much stuff away from view look great. Alternatively, I recently came across this unit which is very clever as it fits around the pedestal yet creates a storage cupboard. All change with no need for a plumber – fantastic.
