Spruce up your home

The last bank holiday of the year is approaching which is a shame of course, but it is also a great time to spruce up your home as the extra day means bigger tasks can be completed, or there’s a day at the end to sit and enjoy the fruits of your labour. The DIY stores will be busy, but why not join in and give your home a lift before autumn starts to draw in.

So this blog is a roll-your-sleeves-up and get stuck in one. No excuses – get it done! Because the sense of satisfaction when it’s all complete is great. Oh and you’ll really deserve that take away and glass of wine at the end too…

Here are a few ideas for a DIY Holiday Bonanza

Painting: Simply painting a room can be done in a day or two. Assuming there’s not too much to repair (always do this properly first else the finish won’t be as good as you’d like) it’s straightforward. Clear the space properly taking things off the wall and push furniture to the middle of the room and cover everything you want to keep clean with dustsheets. Go round all the edges (up to the skirting boards and ceiling and round sockets/switches) with a 1.5” or 2” paintbrush first then do all the bigger areas with a roller. Emulsion paint dries pretty quickly especially in the summer, so if you start early in the morning you can often get the second coat on at the end of the day, then put the room back together the day after.
There are some hot new colours that could be too much if used all over a room but paint one wall, then accessorise in the same shade for a quick makeover. Look at teal, mustard yellow, purple and lime (not together!) which will help keep your home feeling bright as winter draws in. Combine a fresh coat of paint and a feature wall of wallpaper for a brilliant new look. Do the paint first, then the wallpaper not the other way round else you’ll run the risk of getting paint on the newly hung paper.
